Isotretinoin is an oral medication mainly used to treat severe and persistent acne. It is also used in rare cases for certain skin disorders and specific cancer treatments. Isotretinoin belongs to the retinoid family, which means it is related to vitamin A and exists naturally in small amounts in the body.
This drug works by shrinking the sebaceous (oil) glands and greatly reducing oil production in the skin. It also helps kill acne-causing bacteria and lowers skin inflammation. Isotretinoin is the only acne treatment that targets all major causes of acne at the same time, which explains why it is so effective for severe cases.
Isotretinoin is best absorbed when taken with a high-fat meal. Taking it with food can nearly double its effectiveness compared to taking it on an empty stomach. Because it is closely related to vitamin A, it should never be combined with vitamin A supplements due to the risk of toxicity.
